A GUSA Blue is the highest individual sporting award available at Glasgow University.
It is presented to the sportsmen and women who have performed in a consistent and outstanding manner during the previous season.
Nominations are submitted to the GUSA Secretary by the club of which the nominee is a member. They are expected to be supported by a past Blues winner in that sport.
The Blues Committee is convened by the Secretary and is responsible for considering the nominations and deciding whether or not to award a Blue to the individual.
There is a strict set of criteria in place against which individuals are measured. To be awarded a Blue they must fulfil all of the requirements. In the cases where the individual falls slightly short, a Half Blue may be awarded.
A Half Blue is awarded to individuals who have fallen just short of the standard required for a Blue but who have performed at a high level in their sport. However, there is also a strict set of criteria, which must be fulfilled in order for a Half Blue to be awarded.

Emma Mason
Emma has a world ranking of 22 in the ladies doubles meaning that she truly is playing at the top of the game. She competes on the European Badminton Union Circuit and the IBF Super Series, regularly winning tournaments. Emma first represented Scotland as a senior player at the age of 19 in 2006 after rising through the junior ranks. Emma has not been able to represent the University as she is away competing in Europe most weekends and training at the National Badminton centre in Loughborough. The Blues committee felt that her achievements should however be recognised.
Laura Wood
Laura has continued to make an impact on the University scene after being awarded a half blue last year. Laura achieved an overall first in Scottish Universities Dry Slop and a 3rd overall in the British Universities Snowsports Champs. These fantastic performances coupled with top 5 finishes in International Ski Federation races meant Laura was selected for the GB team to go to the World University games. Although she was unable to attend due to work commitments this is still a first class achievement.
Sarah Quinn
Sarah was also awarded a half blue for her performance in 05-06 and has also surpassed them in the season 06-07. She successfully retained her Scottish Universities title in the 400m and was 6th in the same event in BUSA. Sarah has also been active on the international scene placing 1st in the Irish and Northern Irish championships as well as being selected to run for Ireland in the Europeacommitments.n Cup. Running personal best times in these events meant that Sarah was eligible for the AAA champs, although was unable to compete due to study.
Colin Severin
Colin’s performance has been judged on season 05-06 as he has unfortunately been injured for the past season. Colin has also been active on both the University and International Circuit. He placed 1st in the Scottish Uni Championships for the 60m and won a bronze medal for his performance at the British Universities Champs. He has run in the Under 20 AAAs and being selected for the Bank of Scotland National Squad for several years.

She worked her way up from a novice to coxing the Men’s 1st VIII in 06-07, taking them to victories in the Scottish Championships and the Scottish Uni Champs, recording a personal best time. Marianne went on to achieve selection for the Scottish National Rowing Team for the Home Internationals Regatta. Here she coxed the team to a bronze medal and a personal best time.
Nicola Stewart
Nicola has performed to the highest standard as a University Sailor throughout her time at University. She was part of the Ladies A team that finished second in Scottish uni’s league and 1st in the BUSA qualifiers. Nicola finished 1st in the SONAR Scottish Nationals, the Commodors International Cup and the East Patch Race Nights. She was a member of the Scottish Sailing Squad, the RYA Youth Transitional Squad and was selected for the 2003 420 Worlds team.

Most notable are finishing 1st in the relay and 2nd individual at the Darmstadt International, 1st in the Hannover Open as well as 10th in European Trials. Oli also represented Scottish Universities at the Celtic Nations where he won gold in all 5 of his races, a remarkable achievement.
Shona McIntosh
Shona’s achievements are a testament to the training she has undertaken and her performances are of a consistently high standard. Shona’s biggest achievement to date was finishing 1st in the 2007 BUSA London Marathon championships, running a personal best time, with an overall placing of 31st in a world class field. Shona has been selected to represent Scottish Universities for 2 years in a row and has been an integral part of the university hares and hounds club.
Raymond Jellema
Ray is a goalkeeper of an extremely high standard. Throughout his time at University he combined full time studying with being a part time professional footballer with Hamilton Academical FC. Fully breaking into the first team squad in 06-07 resulted in 20 first team performances with 3 man of the match awards and 5 clean sheets. As Ray is under professional contract this has meant he has not been allowed to represent the university football team. Ray was however an active member of the athletics club. Although Ray could not compete for the University football team he is playing at a much higher level and so deserves the award of a Blue.

The University of Glasgow Award for the Development of Sport
This year the award jointly goes to Kevin McQuade and Nigel Andrews.
The past few years have seen some major developments in GUSA as a whole and in several clubs. Two of these clubs have changed massively and it is all down to two individuals. Thanks to Kevin the men’s basketball club has formed a second team, enters national leagues and cups and topped off their achievements by winning their BUSA trophy last season. Nigel’s dedication to the boxing has seen the club increase substantially in size thanks to the hard promotions work done along with securing access to Scotland’s national coach to produce top boxers and stage exhibitions of the sport.
Proctor & Gamble Millennium Team Trophy
The trophy this year goes to the Cheerleading Advanced Squad.
Cheerleading are a relatively new addition to the GUSA family but they are truly a credit. On their first time entering a University competition they were predicted to finish last in all events and instead went on to win to the all girl advanced category. They are officially the best all girl university cheer squad in the UK.
William Ross Cunningham Memorial Trophy
The successful club this year is the Riding Club.
They have had many extremely successful seasons in the past few years and none more so than last. The club has built itself into its strongest ever position on the competitive side winning Glasgow the most BUSA points last season out of any club. However, it is off the field where this club really shine. They have managed to expertly provide opportunities for beginners and have excelled at fundraising. Their positive attitude has seen them earn recognition from other universities across the country.
The winner of this award, Robin Leake, has been extremely influential in the development of GUSA over the past 5 years as our Honorary President. He has kept us all in check when we’ve had outrageous plans and has steered the direction of the association. He has been a crucial source of advice and been our key link to the powers that be in the University. This is his last year on the council before he retires and we would like to recognise his contribution.
