History

GUSA is the oldest student representative body within Glasgow University, preceding the Glasgow University Union by four years and the Students’ Representative Council by five.

Glasgow University Athletic Club (GUAC) was founded on Wednesday 20th April 1881 at a meeting in the English Literature classroom. Professor Bayley Balfour was elected Honorary President and Mr Hugh Hutchison the Secretary.

No time was wasted in obtaining official recognition from the University and a constitution was submitted to the Senate on 28th April, and approved at the next meeting on 30th April.

GUAC thus took its place in the University’s history as the first official organisation, which represented the general body of students.

GUAC’s initial existence was to "promote all forms of Athletic Exercise". This is still our aim today.

Initially, there was a flurry of new "sections" affiliating to GUAC and in 1903 GUAC supported ladies sport by establishing itself in Queen Margaret College.

GUAC continued to provide an illustrious service with a flurry of clubs affiliating, until 1992 when GUAC changed its name to GUSA, Glasgow University Sports Association. This is a more encapsulating title, covering all aspects of the association.

Currently GUSA is developing a partnership with the Sport and Recreation Service to provide a more balanced representation of students. The following President’s devoted their time to GUAC/GUSA and we should recognise their efforts.
