The 5th annual Fresher’s Intervarsity tournament was held on Wednesday 3rd October between the three universities in Glasgow – Glasgow, Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian.
Teams took to the field in 7 sports:
There was a carnival atmosphere up at Garscube Sports Complex with all three outdoor sports being held at our facility. Basketball and Volleyball was held at Caledonian’s Arc with Netball at Strathclyde and Swimming at the Stevenson building.
It is always a great opportunity for team and club captains to see how well the fresher’s perform in match situations before BUSA leagues start. The Women’s Hockey Club captain, Heather Bichan, said “this tournament is such a great idea as it allows us to work out which teams the new girls should be going into and we get a much better idea of their ability rather than just seeing them at training”.
The emphasis of the tournament is always on fun and getting freshers involved, with the results not being published. However, we had pretty much a clean sweep across the board and would definitely have been lifting the trophy if one was awarded!! It all bodes well for the City of Glasgow cup next term!
Started in 2005 after an informal discussion between the sports Presidents of Glasgow and Strathclyde during the previous summer.
In the first year the cup consisted of matches between Glasgow and Strathclyde.
In 2006 the cup was expanded to include Glasgow Caledonian.
As the cup is in its infancy still the ideal format has still not been identified and has so far changed year on year.
In 2005 the matches were all held on one Wednesday afternoon, 16th March.
In 2006 the competition was held over a 3 week period with matches being played on Wednesday 1st, 8th and 15th March.
In 2007 the competition was held over one week with events culminating on the Wednesday and with most matches being played on this ‘finals day’. This seems to have been the best format so far as it reduces demand on facilities but the cup spirit is kept alive by having a tense finals day.
As the cup grows it is hoped that more sports will be included and that we can attract sponsorship, as it becomes a more prominent feature of the University sporting calendar.
The emphasis is very much on winning! This is a much more serious affair than the Freshers Intervarsity and we are the current holders so lets ensure that we retain the cup in 2008!
It is likely this season that it will be held between the BUSA leagues concluding and the knockouts starting.
