Whether you are a seasoned campaigner or starting running for the first time, a bright-eyed fresher or a wizened professor, you are most welcome to join up with the Hares and Hounds - we love fresh meat. We are a non-elitist running club, affiliated to Scottish Athletics, catering for all standards of runner - from the social jogger to the ultramarathoner - and all disciplines of distance runner - road, orienteer, triathlete and beyond.
We've got a number of experienced members as well as a lot of folk who have just started out so you'll be sure to find people of equal ability and experience. We participate in road, cross-country and hill races across the U.K. and abroad with recent destinations including Paris, Rome and the exotic city of Swansea. Your very low membership fee includes race entries, transport to and from events and subsidies for kit. If you're unsure about anything, please get in touch by e-mailing the club captain at captain-handh@gusa.gla.ac.uk.
Training starts from the porch of the Stevenson building at 1730 on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Training with us is free and you turn up as often [or as little] as you like. Training runs are five or six miles at a very, very easy pace with shorter routes available for anyone who feels they need them. During semester one, shorter and slower runs are held for groups of people who are new to running with a gradual increase in miles over the term.
Every November sees us organising our very own Deloitte Glasgow University 5 Mile Road Race around the Garscube sports facility which averages around 400 runners every year. There is of course the obligatory post-race knees-up, too, which is just one of many important dates in our social calendar. Others include the post-race ceilidh in Edinburgh after the Braids hill race (organised by our arch-enemies the Edinburgh Uni Hare & Hounds Club), Christmas dinner, Burns Supper and the infamous TOPP (Transfer of Power Party) to kick off the summer season. As well as these we have regular pub nights and a fortnightly Pasta Parties (they're as cool as they sound but you get fed for free) at club members' flats.
