Karate is a Japanese martial art formed in 1936 by Sensei Gichin Funakoshi, although its origins are centuries old. Translated as the “way of the empty hand”, Karate uses many blocking, punching and kicking techniques to overcome many, or much stronger opponents in an effective and powerful manner. It is composed of three disciplines: kihon (basic technique); kata (formal sequences which become progressively more difficult) and kumite (free sparring).
Classes are instructed by Sensei Mike MacKay (4th Dan), who learned the art under a former European Champion, and has over thirty years teaching experience. We have gradings three times a year, although there’s no pressure to pass or even sit them. However, with a bit of hard work you could get the coveted black belt within four years, so join now!
We are registered under the Scottish Karate Governing Body, giving members an opportunity to compete at the National Championships as well as a range of local competitions throughout the year. The year’s main events are the British and Scottish University championships from which we have come away with medals over the last two years.
Karate is a great way to learn self-defence, flexibility and to keep fit. Beginners are welcome anytime. If you want to find out more, pop along to any of the classes or feel free to contact us by e-mail!
