Healthy mind, healthy body, self defence

Shorinji Kempo is a modern Japanese martial art which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2007. Literally translated as 'Shaolin Temple Fist System', Shorinji Kempo utilises a balance of "hard" techniques - such as blocks, punches and kicks - and "soft" techniques; releases from grappling attacks, throws and pins. The combination forms a comprehensive method of self-defence that does not require brute strength to be effective. Unlike other martial arts, Shorinji Kempo also involves meditation and healing massage to help soothe the aches and pains of a tough training session!

Our club has been active in the University for over 25 years and currently benefits from the instruction of one of the highest ranking black belts in Scotland, who has been training for 17 years. The club regularly travels to both national and international events and we have close links with our sister club, based at Hokkaido University, Japan. In November 2007 we organised our first trip to Hokkaido to visit our twin club, a visit also incorporating the 60th anniversary celebrations at the Budokan in Tokyo and a training seminar at the World Shorinji Kempo HQ on the island of Shikoku.

Co-operation is an important ideal when training in Shorinji Kempo, so it's no surprise that we are a fun, enthusiastic and friendly club. By joining the GUSKC you will have a great opportunity to meet new people, improve your fitness and learn practical self-defence. With enough dedication, it is possible to attain sho dan in three or four year’s time. Beginners are always welcome to participate.
